Planned road and bridge work announced for Jekyll Island

The Downing Musgrove Causeway leading to Jekyll Island is about to be widened and resurfaced.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will begin the project on Monday. Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with repaving starting near the archways at the entrance to the island and end at the eastern end of the Jekyll Island bridge.

Expect short periodic delays and a pilot car to guide traffic through the construction zone.

At the end of each work day, two-lane traffic will be available for the entire length of the causeway.

Weather permitting, the work is scheduled for completion by Spring 2017.

The Jekyll Island Authority will also be repairing the road behind Tidelands 4-H Center, just off S. Riverview Drive, that leads to the island’s public boat ramp. The road will be closed periodically Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, DOT crews will close portions of the Sidney Lanier Bridge, northbound and southbound lanes starting Wednesday and continuing through Dec. 21 for road work. Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, except Sundays.
