William Soule Newberry Sr. 90, of St. Simons Island, passed away peacefully in his sleep, on Friday, July 14, at Magnolia Manor under hospice care.
“Pops,” as he was known to all, was born Oct. 28, 1926, to the late George C. Newberry and Dorothy Soule Newberry in Augusta. He was predeceased by wife Mary Pate Newberry; and the mother of his sons, Margaret Newberry Loadholt; as well as two brothers, George Newberry and Mutt Newberry.
He is survived by his two sons, William S. Newberry Jr. (Jan Sala) and Michael W. Newberry (Linda); and a stepson, Alva Lee (Al) Pate (Pamela); grandchildren, W. Keith Newberry, Cole Newberry (Jacqueline) and Kaley Newberry Shutts; and great-granddaughter Zara Newberry.
Pops proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He later worked with his father in Newberry and Son Landscaping, and was awarded the contract to landscape Jekyll Island starting in 1958.
He continued to beautify Jekyll Island until his retirement.
He was a kind and gentle man, who never met a stranger. He enjoyed golf, and treasured his model plane collection. He continued to enjoy gardening after his retirement, as his friends at Magnolia Manor are well aware. He kept the planters at the Main House filled with colorful flowers and plants year round. He was a caring father, doting grandfather and proud great-grandfather. His family came first and foremost in his life! He will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 21 at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles.
