On Friday night, Glynn Academy’s baseball team won their first region championship in 20 years. I fully expected that your newspaper would give their players, coaches and program their due respect in Saturday’s paper. I opened the BN that morning and low and behold the entire front page of the sports was covered with huge color photos of two players and coaches and a huge article. One problem. It was about BHS basketball. Again.
The GA Region title story was a small article crammed in a small space on page 2. The priorities are obviously backwards in your sports department. But then again, this is really a recurring theme with your paper. It seems that any story about BHS is highlighted ad nauseam especially, the one sport in which they excel. They had their moment. They had their coverage. They had their accolades. It was GA’s time to be in the spotlight. Those student athletes worked hard to accomplish a well-deserved championship. However, The Brunswick News and the sports department evidently saw fit to downplay their success. Being relegated to page 2 and virtually ignoring them was disrespectful and very disappointing. Twenty years ago there was a half-page photo and a well-written story about the title won by the 1997 Terrors. Murray Poole did an excellent job. Maybe the sports editor should call him for some pointers. The bias with which this paper shows towards all things BHS is clear. Maybe you should become The Brunswick High News.
