We can expect, and I believe fairly early on, that the Trump administration will manufacture some kind of “national emergency,” which it will use to silence and intimidate critics, in the press, in the Congress, in academia, in the progressive clergy and elsewhere. Trump has long since begun this by means of his “Tweetocracy.”

We don’t need to be afraid. We just need to pay attention. We have a Constitution and a substantial popular majority in the country.

The Republican Congress will soon cancel the healthcare of twenty million, send abortion back into the back alleys, sabotage environmental law, and attempt to privatize Medicare and Medicaid. Yesterday, I phoned the offices of Johnny Isakson and David Perdue to urge them to support Bernie Sanders’ amendment to protect Medicare and Medicaid from such measures already begun. I urge each of you to do similarly, to write and phone our legislators and our news media and get actively involved in the support of free speech and civil liberties, civil rights, marriage equality, the environment, and women’s reproductive rights. Put yourself in harm’s way, because, people, you are there already.

The ACLU and the Southern Poverty Law Center will be two good candidates for your support, for starters, as will the Center for Bio-diversity.

Fascism has always been a tendency in this country, and if you think these people won’t come for you, you’re nuts.
