The Brunswick and Glynn Academy girls basketball teams featured a combined 10 all-region selections on the 2017 Region 2-6A All-Region first team, second team and honorable mention.

Region champs Brunswick High also featured the Region’s Coach of the Year, Maria Mangram, and Player of the Year, senior Khamiya Blackshear.

Mangram said Blackshear’s experience and role on the region-championship team helped elevate her all-region status to player of the year.

“She’s been playing with us for some years now,” Mangram said. “(Player of the Year) is always something that can be reached by whoever that player is leading the team, especially when your team is leading the region.”

For Mangram, this is her third-consecutive Coach of the Year honor. The region championship perhaps solidified her recognition, but Mangram said this was one of her toughest seasons as a coach.

“This year I had to do way more coaching than in years past,” Mangram said. “It was one of my most difficult years that I’ve had in eight years of coaching, there were a lot of things going on.”

Each school had five players, two first-teamers, two second-teamers and one honorable mention.

For the Pirates, juniors Antonisha Davis and Shamia Taylor both made first team all-region. Senior Chelsea Davis and freshman Keya Daniels made the second team and sophomore Nyree Moody was named an honorable mention.

Lady Terrors senior Erianna Campbell represented her school on the first team, alongside teammate Zoesha Smith. Smith is the only freshman on the first team.

The Lady Terrors’s senior class was well represented. Glynn Academy had the most seniors on all region teams teams with Bria McGirth and Cala Mack making the second team.

While the outgoing seniors made up a big chunk of the Lady Terrors’ production, coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney said the youth movement led by Smith is a reason to be optimistic about Glynn Academy girls basketball moving forward.

“I think the kids that are coming back are good kids, and they play really hard,” Gwaltney said. “Glynn has a strong future.”

Junior Asia Bacon was named an honorable mention, rounding out the all-region class for Glynn County Schools.

Glynn Academy and Brunswick both finished the season 16-12.

The two schools split the regular season series between each other, before the Lady Pirates beat the Lady Terrors in the region tournament finals.

Both were eliminated from the 6A state tournament in the first round.
