Basketball season is just around the corner for the men’s and women’s teams at College of Coastal Georgia, and the Mariner squads want to showcase their skills before the season starts.
Coastal is hosting its annual Mariner Madness event at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Howard Coffin Gym. Admission is free for everyone.
Modeled after the Midnight Madness college basketball tradition, Mariner Madness will include a variety of competitions so the players can display their individual talents.
A skills competition will kick off the event, and there will also be a 3-point shooting contests. A men’s and women’s champion will be crowned with the winners going head-to-head to determine the overall champion.
There will also be short scrimmages for both teams with a seven-minute running clock. A slam dunk contest by members of the men’s team will close out the festivities.
The event will also include giveaways for fans, and a special prize for College of Coastal Georgia students — a $50 gift certificate compliments of the college’s bookstore.
There will also be audience participation events with coaches and players including a dance contest and an ice-cream eating contest.
Coastal Georgia golfer Diane Lim is in contention to win her second tournament of the fall in Valdosta.
Lim carded a 2-over 74 during Monday’s first round of the Thomas University Fall Invitational at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Lim’s score has her in solo second, two shots behind Thomas Unversity’s Caroline Parrish.
Right behind Lim is teammate Niquole Mangal, who is tied for third after tallying a 3-over 75. Rounding out Coastal’s scoring was Molly Antor (81), Libby Luedtke (91) and Madison Manning (96).
The Mariners are in sixth place in the team competition with a 321 total. Thomas leads the tournament with a 306, followed closely by Campbellsville University (307) and University of the Cumberlands (308).
The tournament concludes today with the final round.
